November 13, 2018, 11:30 am
Our age 55+ Senior group, Forever Young, will meet in the OCC gym starting at 11:30 am.  Doris Adamek will give a book review on "The Day The World Came To Town:  9/11 In Gander, Newfoundland".  Bring a sandwich.  Drinks, Jello and dessert will be provided.

On September 11, 2001, when the U.S. closed its air space, 38 airplanes were forced to land at Gander International Airport, Newfoundland, Canada.  The town of 10,000 people and surrounding towns hosted over 6,000 passengers and crew for several days by opening their schools, churches and homes to the visitors.  Not only did they house and feed them all, but ways were even found to entertain them.  The events inspired this book, by Dan DeFede, and the Broadway musical "Come From Away."  It is an amazing, inspirational story which should not be forgotten, and showcases the remarkable human capacity to triumph in spite of tradgedy.  O
n the first anniversary of the attacks, then-Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chrétien at the Gander airport said, “9/11 will live long in memory as a day of terror and grief, but thanks to the countless acts of kindness and compassion done for those stranded visitors here in Gander and right across Canada, it will live forever in memory as a day of comfort and of healing.”
